In this study, we evaluated the current status of the hospital network systems in Korea, and categorized the networks into three types with some attributes, such as activities of the networks. We also tried to find participants¡¯ aims to join the networks, and to discover obstacles of success of the networks. Previous studies classified hospital networks with their performances and participants¡¯ aims. There were three kinds of hospital network systems, including clinical-vertical integration (Type A called in this paper), clinical/managerialvertical integration(Type B), and clinical/managerial-horizontal /vertical integration (Type C). We carried out the questionnaire survey with the network managers of 236 hospitals between December 27th, 2005 and January 25th, 2006. We derived three major attributes of the networks¡¯ performances via principal component factor analysis. These attributes were the improvement of the hospital anagement, the efficiency improvement of operating hospitals, and the improvement of the quality of care. We observed that the performance levels of the hospital networks in Korea were usually low. The performance level of Type C is higher than those of Type A and B. There were the obstacles of network, such as deficiencies of information and poor preparation of these system. About 52% of hospitals join the network system now, while about 90% will participate in them. To collect more participants, the hospital network must provide the services of improving the quality of care and improving the management efficiency.
